Zeke Johnson is a Black sharecropper who loses his family's cotton earnings in a rigged crap game. When a fight erupts, Zeke's brother is shot and killed. Overcome with guilt, Zeke becomes a traveling Baptist preacher — but when the seductive Chick reappears, she pulls him away from his ministry, setting off a collision between faith, lust, and tragedy in this landmark early all-Black Hollywood sound film.
